Deewali 2008

Deewali 2008Diwali is the festival of lights. Diwali reminds us of the brilliant display of colorful fireworks and crackers, which explode in the dark nights. The festival arrives on the new moon day (Amavasya) of the Kartik month of the Hindu calendar. Almost everywhere in India old and young enjoys Diwali fireworks. Crackers on Diwali are the main attraction to the children. Earthen lamps or "diyas" are generally placed on the balcony or window edges to decorate the house. Nowadays the candles of various colors and forms have replaced earthen lamps. Even electric lights of different shapes and sizes are used to illuminate the dark of Diwali.

Safety

* It is advisable that all lamps and candles are put off when nobody is likely to be around. Its better not to leave lamps and candles burning all through the night long after the festivities are over.
* Its better to ensure that candles are not near any flammable material like wood, cloth or paper.
* Rockets should be handled carefully.
* To curb pollution from firecrackers and save the expenses, common community display of fireworks are becoming increasingly popular.

Diwali is incomplete without fireworks. Fireworks and crackers are used the world over, only the occasion differs in different countries.

Halloween 2008

Halloween Girl

Halloween, is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. Halloween, like any other festival is inspired through traditions that have transpired through ages from one generation to another. The term Halloween is shortened from All-hallow-evening, as it is the eve of "All Hallows' Day", which is now also known as All Saints' Day. The Halloween owes it's origin to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. Halloween is celebrated in several countries of the Western world, most commonly in Ireland (where it originated), the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, and occasionally in parts of Australia. In Sweden the All Saints' official holiday takes place on the first Saturday of November.

On Halloween night, adults and children dress up as creatures from the underworld (e.g., ghosts, ghouls, zombies, witches and goblins), light bonfires, and enjoy spectacular fireworks displays. The prime activities in the Halloween party include trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses", carving Jack-o'-lanterns, reading scary stories and watching horror movies. The houses are frequently adorned with turnips carved into scary faces; lights or candles are sometimes placed inside the carvings to present an eerie effect.

The carved pumpkin or the jack-o-lantern as it is popularly know in the United States of America, is lit by a candle inside and is one of Halloween's most prominent symbols. These carved pumpkin first Originated in Europe and were initially carved from a turnip or rutabaga. The Celts believed that the head was the most powerful part of the body containing the spirit and the knowledge, so they used the "head" of the vegetable to frighten off any superstitions.

People also love to celebrate Halloween by sending Halloween cards and Halloween greeting cards as a part of their Halloween wishes and Halloween invitation. During this part of the year, the sale of the Halloween cards, Halloween postcards and the Halloween greeting cards are on the rise. Although the commercialization of Halloween did not start until the 20th century, beginning perhaps with Halloween postcards with hundreds of varieties and designs which were most popular amongst the Halloween ideas. Halloween Horror Nights, which is celebrated at the Universal Orlando Resort, is a Halloween event presented annually. The tradition began in 1991 in Universal Studios Florida with only one haunted house and since then it has continued annually for 18 years to become one of the largest Halloween events in the United States.

Halloween has over the years become a very prominent festival of celebration of horror all over the world. Wish you all a Very Happy Halloween on 2008.

'Will the real Batman please stand up?' - The Chronicles of The Dark Knight

I am famous for joining the band wagons late, but I believe it's better late than never. A had planned to watch The Dark Knight a long time before it was released. But somehow during the initial days of screening I could not make it to the theaters. But finally when I did, it was 3 hours of magic.

Although this movie is titled The Dark Knight, I would not dare to say that it could as well have been titled Why So Serious? Because believe it or not, this movie is all about the madness named Heath Ledger who played The Joker. Set in the offset of Gotham and partly in Hong Kong, this is a chronicle of the darkness that reigns the heart of a human being.

This movie shows how thin the line between good and evil is where the once most honorable Harvey Dent, played by Aaron Eckhart, does not take a minute to join hands with The Joker when his love interest dies in the hands of The Joker. And then there is The Joker himself. This is supposed to be Heath Ledger's finest performance before he died. And although it never got an Oscar, mostly because the Oscar committee does not have any affinities towards presenting posthumous awards, that too for the Best Actor category, yet nearly all of us expected to see him get the Oscar. He portrayed the role of The Joker brilliantly and is more than a worthy successor for Jack Nicholson. Heath had outperformed Jack Nicholson. He had stayed in a hotel room for more than a month just to get a feel of the character. The Joker is a madness, pure chaos, pure anarchy, who does not stop for anything. At one point of time in the movie, The Joker tells him that the two of them are destined to fight forever, and how Batman really IS incorruptible. The Joker reveals to him, however, that his real plan was to engineer the fall of Gotham's White Knight, Harvey Dent, since that would introduce much more chaos when a good man like Dent is shown descending into chaos and evil.

No doubt about it that The Joker is the deserving nemesis of the Batman. But now it would be difficult to find someone, anyone, who would outperform Heath Ledger. After all it was a Heath Ledger movie all way through. And maybe when the Directors and Producers of the next Batman movie would be sitting, thinking who might be able to to be a worthy successor of The Joker as played by Heath Ledger, The Joker would come and stand in front of them. Then he would say, "Why so serious?".
